✦ Voivod — “Dimension Hatröss”
(1988, experimental industrial progressive thrash metal)
Voivod has always done sci fi themed metal but this is their only concept album with a full story. It’s about a scientist who creates a micro universe with an atom smasher, then uses a machine that transports them into it. They spend some time in it, but it’s an Orwellian nightmare filled with terrorism, mind control, and mass surveillance. They’re so disgusted with the violence and oppression in the world they created that they telepathically send a quasar to destroy it. The entire album has a dissonant, claustrophobic, paranoid feel to it. One of those albums that came to me at exactly the right time, I was 18 and in college)
